How we measure

Every trek page separates three things on purpose: what we measured off a device, what we sourced and dated, and what we haven't walked yet. Here's exactly how that works — and how to check us.

The devices

Route data comes off a GPS watch, recorded by a named person who was on the trail — not scraped from other blogs. The distances, climbs, elevation profiles and heart rate are what the device logged.

The two treks above are measured and walked. Our own first-hand walk is the Annapurna Circuit in November 2026 — we're deep in preparation now. Until we've walked a route and verified the track ourselves, we don't publish a destination guide for it — we say so on the page instead.

Measured, sourced, or flagged

  • Measured — off a GPS file we hold: distances, elevation, heart rate. Checkable (see below).
  • Sourced — planning facts we didn't measure ourselves (costs, permit rules, seasons). Cited and dated, given as ranges, never as false precision.
  • First-hand testimony — what a named, experienced hiker sees on the trail (e.g. Kak Yaa). Attributed throughout, and we publish where our reading of the evidence differs from theirs.
  • Not yet walked — a route we may hold a track for but haven't walked and verified ourselves. We hold it back rather than publish a destination guide we can't stand behind; the Annapurna Circuit goes live after we walk it in Nov 2026.
  • [verify] — anything unconfirmed. It never goes live: we fill it, or the page stays a draft.

The honest caveats

Elevation. Ascent figures are the device's barometric reading — not summed from raw GPS, which overcounts. Village heights use conventional map figures for labels, so a barometric altitude can differ by a few metres from a map number. Both are stated for what they are.

Heart rate. HR is one person's body — individual, and no guide to yours. We publish it as corroboration of effort, always caveated, never as a target.

How accurate are keitreks' trek numbers?

They are what the device logged, not scraped from other blogs or estimated. What is the difference between "measured" and "sourced" on keitreks?
Measured means it comes off a GPS file we hold — distances, elevation, heart rate, all checkable. Sourced means a planning fact we did not measure ourselves — costs, permit rules, seasons — cited, dated and given as ranges rather than false precision. We also flag first-hand testimony from a named hiker, and clearly mark any route measured from a track but not yet walked.
Who recorded the GPS tracks?
Kani, an Ohana trip leader, recorded the Annapurna Base Camp track on a COROS watch in October 2025. Nashriq recorded the Everest Base Camp files on a Garmin in November 2025. Both are named, and both consented to being the walker on a published record.
Can I download the GPS files and check them myself?
Yes. The measured GPX for each trek is on its itinerary page and on this one — load it onto your own watch or into any GPS tool and read the same distances, climbs and elevation we do. A file you can open is the clearest test of 'measured'.
Why do your elevation figures differ from other sites?
Ascent and descent are the device's smoothed barometric totals, not summed from raw GPS, which overcounts both. Village and summit heights use conventional map figures for labels. So a barometric altitude can sit a few metres off a map number — we say which is which rather than pretending they are the same measurement.
Do you use heart rate to rate a trek's difficulty?
No. Heart rate is one person's body and no guide to yours, so we publish it only as corroboration of effort, always caveated. Our difficulty score is computed from the route's physical numbers — maximum altitude, distance, total climbing and days — which compares across treks in a way one walker's heart rate cannot.
